A Message from Our Director, December 2025

Dear Friends, Supporters, and Partners,

The "Impact Spotlight: Wheels of Change" for                                                                   Seed of Hope Enhanced Living International                                                                       (SOHELI) in Jos, Nigeria, emphasizes the                                                                             significance of mobility and vocational support.                                                                   In a society where persons with disabilities                                                                           (PWDs) often face discrimination and                                                                                   marginalization, SOHELI's initiative offers vital                                                                     tools for independence and inclusion to those                                                                     most in need. Growing up with a disability in Nigeria involves many challenges, such as negative public attitudes, lack of acceptance, and insensitivity. Stigma and discrimination are prevalent; PWDs are frequently seen as "invalids" or dependents, and some are even cursed or blamed for bringing misfortune to their families. Employers often view PWDs as burdens, reducing their employment opportunities. Disabilities can originate from various causes, including birth defects, diseases like polio—sometimes untreated due to vaccine refusal—and acts of terrorism. These physical and social obstacles limit access to social services, education, and economic opportunities, creating a cycle of poverty and dependence that hampers individuals with disabilities from leading fulfilling lives.

As the year concludes, we reflect on the inspiring journey of hope and transformation in Jos, Nigeria. At Seed of Hope Enhanced Living International (SOHELI), we believe that mobility signifies dignity, and empowerment equates to freedom. With your steadfast support this year, we've witnessed lives transform as more persons with disabilities receive wheelchairs and training, fostering independence and inclusion.

Your trust in our mission inspires us to continue our work, helping persons with disabilities not just survive, but thrive and contribute to our vibrant community. Thank you for being a seed of hope!

Warmly,

Rev. Dr. Hassan Ayiku Dicks

Impact Spotlight: Wheels of Change
  • Mobility Transforms Lives: Mobility is a prerequisite for social engagement. By providing wheelchairs, the "Wheels of Change" project enables individuals to leave their isolation and reconnect with their communities. They can attend social gatherings, religious services, and community events, which helps combat the stigma and name-calling they often face. This increased visibility challenges existing prejudices and promotes a more inclusive society. On occasions such as the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, SOHELI's events that distribute these aids further raise awareness of the needs and rights of PWDs. In December 2024, we distributed over 35 wheelchairs and 15 white canes, giving children and adults the gift of movement, enabling them to attend school, work, and participate fully in community life.

  • Empowerment Through Training: Beyond mobility, our vocational and life skills training assists individuals in establishing sustainable livelihoods, thereby promoting independence and self-reliance. "Wheels of Change" represents a vital initial step toward achieving economic self-sufficiency by enabling persons with disabilities (PWDs) to travel and access educational and vocational programs at the Seed of Hope Skills Center. The center offers training across various technical disciplines, including motor mechanics, tailoring, welding, electronics, and computing. By equipping participants with skills that are relevant to the market, SOHELI empowers them to secure employment and lead autonomous, fulfilling lives. This initiative confronts the misconception that PWDs are a burden, emphasizing their potential contributions to the economy and society. Overall, the project functions as a significant catalyst in breaking the cycle of poverty linked to disability within the region.

Community Corner: Faces of Hope

Meet Hanatu: Once                                                                homebound,                                                                            Hanatu now navigates                                                            her local market with her                                                        new wheelchair,                                                                        selling her handmade                                                              crafts and supporting her family. "This wheelchair isn't just metal and rubber; it's my wings," she shared, beaming.

The primary impact of "Wheels of Change" is the restoration of physical mobility. For many recipients, a wheelchair is not just a device; it is the key to escaping the confines of their homes and communities. As Mr. Monday Inpuko, a beneficiary, stated, "Seed of Hope has been a beacon of light in my life, providing me with not only a wheelchair but also the support and encouragement to pursue my dreams".

This newfound mobility directly addresses the physical barriers in the environment, allowing PWDs to move freely and participate in daily activities. It fosters independence and choice, shifting the narrative from doing "for" the person to doing "with" the person, in line with the social model of disability.

Success Story - The "Jos Mobility Walk": Our recent community walk brought together families, volunteers, and beneficiaries, celebrating inclusion and raising awareness for accessibility in public spaces.
